With Plus-sell, it is possible to show the first Plus-sell recommendation in a pop-up on the Thank-you page. This way you know your customer has noticed it, as the rest of the screen is placed behind an overlay. Your customer then must actively choose whether they are interested in the product or not. Once they close the Pop-up, they will still see the regular Plus-sell display on the Thank you page with the rest of the product recommendations, as only the first product is shown in a Pop-up.
This approach to product recommendations is not for every webshop, and requires careful consideration. When used well, it can boost sales even more. However, when used poorly, it could harm your customer’s trust in your brand.

When to use Pop-up?
For the Pop-up to be effective, the product recommendation displayed in it needs to be extremely accurate. Research shows that when you get the recommendation right, the customer feels seen and positively surprised. As a result, they are also more likely to purchase the additional product.
The best Plus-sell setups to use the Pop-up is either when Plus-sell is used together with a professional product recommendation engine (such as Clerk.io or Hello Retail), or when your product base is small enough for you to manage recommendations manually.
How to ensure your product recommendation in the Pop-up is well-tailored
Use Pop-up, when your product base is quite small and you could manually hand-pick relevant recommendations to be shown in the Plus-sell. Use the platform's native setup to do this.
For example, say you sell hand-made leather bags and have a limited number of different models available. In general, for Plus-sell recommendations you might want to select smaller leather goods like wallets and coin purses, bag accessories such as exchangeable bag straps and key rings, or leather care products like cleaners, protectors, and leather moisturizers. But when you decide to also use the Plus-sell Pop-up, your safest bet would be using only leather care products as recommendations. Leather care products are relevant to every customer who purchases leather goods, while not every customer will be interested in a key ring or a coin purse. This way you maximize your chances of success for the chosen product.
Use Pop-up, when your product base is quite large, but you are using a product recommendation engine. However, ensure the strategies used by the engine are very well tailored and rely more on the individual customer interests (products they have viewed, etc.), than just the common behaviors of all customers (popular products, last bought, etc.). Reach out to your recommendation engine directly for any changes.
If you have a larger product base and are only using Plus-sell with our Custom product recommendation setup – we do not recommend using the Pop-up. The likelihood of the same product being relevant for multiple different purchases containing different items from different categories is very low. Product recommendations in a Pop-up that are not tailored well to the individual customer might cause frustration instead of satisfaction and could hurt your relationship with the customer.
